The United Nations has designated 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP), recognising the global importance of these vast landscapes and the communities who care for them.

Rangelands cover around 75% of Australia’s landmass, spanning an extraordinary range of environments—woodlands, grasslands, shrublands, deserts and tropical savannahs. They include some of the nation’s most iconic and diverse regions: the Pilbara in Western Australia, the vast Red Centre, the Barkly Tableland in the Northern Territory, and Queensland’s sweeping Channel Country. Occupying immense physical and cultural space, Australia’s rangelands are truly the heart and soul of the nation.

These landscapes also hold significant economic value. Around one‑third of Australia’s livestock graze on rangelands, and both the mining and tourism industries rely heavily on them. Central to the sustainable management of these environments are Australia’s pastoralists—known by many names including graziers, producers, stockmen and stockwomen, jackaroos and jillaroos. Their stewardship is vital to ensuring the long‑term health and productivity of the land.
